I go to India every year to find wonderful craftsmanship with a long and distinguished history. Since 2000 BC India has been known for their extraordinary hand block printing techniques, which are kept alive in the artisan workshops that I love to work with.
The basic technique of traditional hand block printing is created by hand carving designs into wooden blocks, stamping onto vegetable dyes and then onto cotton cloth. A high degree of skill is required not only in carving the blocks but in placing the blocks on the cloth.
A set of blocks can print on average 2000 metres of cloth. In each length of print I love the individuality that each craftsman brings to the printing process.
